Suzy's first birthday party almost killed me... Literally, it almost killed me. Thank goodness I had the help of Lauren and Kalon. They worked their tails off, too. One night we were up until almost 2:00 AM making mess for this party. I will say that all the hard work paid off. Everything was absolutely perfect. Thanks girls :) Suzy and I both appreciate you!!
For the goody bags/parting gifts we set up a little treat table. We tried to keep the colors red and black in mind when selecting the goodies. The treat table included: tootsie rolls, gumballs, jelly beans, chocolate, Oreos, Cracker Jacks, fruit snacks, and licorice. Those little lady bugs by the candy corn buckets were a huge hit. You can wind them up and they turn flips and such. The kids loved them. They cost a whopping buck. Can't beat that!
The treat bags were in the silver bucket. I added the little red tutu that Suzy wore on Halloween for a little extra "pop". It turned out pretty darn cute.
The licorice is in a black flower pot that came from Wal Mart. It was also only a buck. The little silver cans were found in the Target dollar section.
The black basket full of candy came from Michael's. It was solid black, and I just hot glued a red flower on it. Perfection.
I went through all my pictures and printed one off from each month of Suzy's life, thus far. We cut out yellow flowers using scrapbook paper, and circles for her pictures. A little double sided tape attached those. Then, taped black pipe cleaners to the back and shoved them down into foam in the flower pots. Add a little shredded paper. The pots were originally just plain red. We glued ribbon on two of them, and black dots on the other two. The napkins went along with the red, black, and white theme...
This black pot was also solid black, those little bugs are actually push pins... I just shoved them in the pot (it is plastic). It worked nicely.
I did the same thing with this little black basket that housed the chocolate covered marshmallows. Those were one of the easier things that I made. All you need is jumbo marshmallows, cake pop sticks, red melting chocolate, and sprinkles. Super easy.
Every girl loves chocolate covered strawberries, even Suzy. She loved them. We whipped those up real quick one night. They were delicious. The black tortilla chips and red salsa followed our theme. The black basket that held the cheese balls was plain, too. I just glued ribbon in it.
My mom's dining room table is where we decided to set up the main foods for the party. I made a pizza dip, bagel bites, and found deli pinwheels. Everything else was a dessert.
These little guys were the product of Lauren. We found the idea online, and she decided she wanted to take on this task... They turned out perfect. It is nothing but a strawberry with a blueberry toothpicked to the top, and mini chocolate chips pressed into the strawberry. Easy, easy, easy.
These bug rice crispy treats were pretty obnoxious to make, but they turned out adorable. You have to make one pan of red rice crispy treats and a pan of black. Just use food coloring to dye it. I used an egg cookie cutter for the big bugs, and a pumpkin cutter for the baby bugs. You use the cutters on the red first. Then, I used a teaspoon measuring spoon to cut the black for the heads. Just shove the black heads into the red, it sticks quite nicely. The eyes are Wilton edible eyes. The dots are mini M&Ms. Yes, we dug through a bag of M&Ms just to find brown ones.
These pretzels were so tedious. First, you have to dip the top half of the pretzels in red melted candy, let that dry, then dip the top half of the pretzel in the melted milk chocolate, let that dry, then use black tubed icing and make the little black dots on them... It was a lot of petty work, but turned out to be scrumptious.
The pretzel rods were easy compared to the twists. Just melted red candies and dipped the pretzels, then added some chocolate sprinkles.
Kalon's sister made Suzy's cakes. She did an amazing job. They were perfect. Not only were they so cute, but they tasted delicious. Oh my gosh, I am so glad there was some left over. I have been gobbling on it as much as possible. It is just so tasty.
We used red, white, and burlap to cover all the tables. I also bought the paper flowers at Michael's and stuck them on the table where there was some empty spaces. Everything was so cute, and her guests loved it. For Suzy's second birthday I think it would be cheaper and easier for us just to go the beach for the weekend....
I just wanted everyone to remember her first birthday, including myself. I can say that I will not be forgetting this day for a very, very, very long time.
The things we do for our kiddos..... I think I'll take a nap now.
